What is Ayurveda?

“The Wisdom of Life”

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga, and is a healing system that focuses on all aspects of life; mind, body and spirit, honoring our whole being.  The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term and translates to “the wisdom of life”.  The healing art originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The main focus of Ayurveda is prevention of dis-ease. And when disease is present, we look to uncover the root cause of the symptom.  Ayurveda uses food as medicine, and teaches us that with the proper diet and lifestyle we can create a life of balance, ease, and bliss.

Ayurveda is based on the belief that nothing is right for everyone and everything is right for someone.  We are all completely unique.  There is not one nutrition plan that works for everyone, we all have different needs. We use the doshas (vata, pitta, kapha), the elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether), and qualities (hot/cold, dry/wet, heavy/light, soft/hard… etc.) to better understand the correct foods and lifestyle practices to achieve optimal health for the individual. Ayurveda also acknowledges our connection to nature and uses the seasons and what mother earth provides us with as a guide to what foods we should be consuming.

Along with diet, Ayurveda takes a look at daily routine to create balance.  This includes sleep, daily cleansing practices, yoga/exercise, meditation, and breath work. Ayurveda helps customize these lifestyle routines so they are right for You.

It is a practice that gives us the chance to live life to the fullest.  Ayurveda is the guide; you are your own healer.
